Rotax Pro Tour Round 1

Round 1 of the Rotax Pro Tour was held at Port Melbourne, Victoria 26 January 2019.
Round 1 was the First race for Hugh Barter in 2019 and featured Hugh’s second year in the Junior Max Class. The Junior Max class is a category recognised all around the World for junior drivers.

In Australia this class races on the Mojo D2 tyre, with the engine required to meet technical specifications. This makes the class more user-friendly, cost-effective and is one of the most competitive - with emphasis on the driver's ability.

A number of the top ranked competitors in Junior Max at the end of the Pro Tour season will qualify for the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals where they will represent Australia and compete against the best Rotax racers in the World.

Hugh was very excited to race and his aim was win the 1st round of Rotax Pro Tour.

Day 1 held qualifying and 3 heat races. Despite his successful practice, Hugh was disappointed to have qualified 5th. However, after a debrief with his driving coach, Hugh focused on maximizing the remainder of his weekend.

Heat 1 – Started 5th position and finished 5th. Hugh caught up to 3rd but a minor error saw him lose 2 place. Heat 2 – Hugh started 5th and finished 4th. Hugh had good start and caught up to 3rd, but during the race lost one position despite recording quick laps.

Heat 3 – started 5th and finished 3rd. On lap 3 Hugh took the lead and remained there for the rest of the race - however Hugh received a Nosecone penalty and lost 2 positions. Heat 1, 2 and 3 race results accumulated points and determined the prefinal start position.

Prefinal race - Started in 4th position and finished 5th. Hugh made a good start and was 3rd on lap 2. On lap 3, Hugh was involved in an incident and lost position - finishing 5 .

Final race – Started from 5th position and finished 4 . Hugh had a good pace but was unable to challenge for a podium. Hugh learnt he needed to be more aggressive and make moves, rather
than waiting for things to happen.
